I sent an email to Simaudio; why haven't I received a reply yet ?
We're a manufacturer and normally operate from Monday to Friday.
Consequently, emails that are sent to us on the weekend may not be read until
Monday. As well, there are several different people that handle the emails
sent to the various addresses and they are not always at their computers
(or even in the office for that matter).
In any event, we always
reply to every email as promptly as possible so please be patient.

|
Should I leave my Simaudio component(s) powered on all the time ?
In a word, YES.   Simaudio components use various electronic devices
(such as JFETs, MOSFETs and BiPolars) which require several days of constant current to
fully stabilize. This is especially true for digitally based audio components where thermal
stability is absolutely crucial. As a result, leaving your Simaudio component "powered on"
all the time will yield optimal sonic performance. Preamplifiers and Integrated Amplifiers,
CD & DVD Players, and Home Theater Processors may be switched into "standby" mode when not
in use without compromising performance; When in "Standby" mode, all critical internal
electronic parts are powered up to maintain optimal performance. Simaudio components
use as little as 18 watts and no more than 60 watts at idle.
|
What is the required "Break-in" period for new Simaudio components?
The "Break-in" periods are as follows:
- 6 weeks for Preamplifiers and Integrated Amplifiers.
- 3 weeks for Power Amplifiers
- 4 weeks for Digital Products (CD & DVD Players, HT Processors)
These times imply constant operation.   If they seem a bit
excessive, the reasons are as follows: Our components are solid-state
and use certain devices which require a fair amount of time to stabilize
and reach optimal performance (see previous question).   As well, since
preamplifiers deal with much lower voltages and we use no
buffering/coupling/filtering capacitors in the signal path, they require more
"Break-in" time than other components.
|
What's the difference between the "reset/standby
button" and the "On/Off power switch" ?
The "On/Off power switch" controls the AC main feed and should be left on
at all times.   The "reset button" is a "soft" power up switch and is
the actual mechanism for powering up your amplifier.
|
Why are there 4 RCA inputs on the back of my stereo amplifier ?
There's one pair (2) of RCA inputs per channel multiplied by 2 channels,
resulting in a total of 4 inputs.   One input on each of the channels
is clearly marked "+" and the other is "-".   Normally you should use
the "+" inputs and leave the "dummy" terminators inserted into the "-" inputs.
However, in the event that your preamplifier inverts phase, as is the case
with certain preamplifiers, then you should use the "-" inputs and "dummy"
terminate the "+" inputs.
|
Should I leave the 2 "dummy" RCA terminators plugged into the rear of
my MOON power amplifier?
YES.   Removing them may substantially increase the
amount of noise introduced into the audio signal.   In the event that
you're operating in Balanced mode (via XLR connectors),   please
Read the next question.
|
Why does my Simaudio amplifier play louder on one channel ?
When operating a Simaudio amplifier in balanced mode, the   "dummy"   RCA
terminators MUST BE REMOVED from the single ended RCA inputs on
the rear of the amplifier.
|
What is required so that I can bridge my amplifier(s) ?
A customized "Y-cable" adapter is required.   Please contact our service
department for further information.
|
Why does the volume control on my P-5 preamplifier make faint mechanical
clicking sounds when I change the setting ?.
The P-5 uses a discrete gain stage that employs a relay network which
selects only one resistor for each individual volume setting.   The clicking
is a result of front-end controller cascading through these different relays.

What is the reason for the different name plates / badges
on Simaudio MOON products?
A brief history on the MOON product line best explains this:   Originally
(1996), MOON products were built with a gold-colored oval name-plate inscribed
with the "Celeste" name. However, the "Celeste" name was eventually replaced
(1997) with "Sim Audio".   In both cases, the faceplates were a pewter
color with a "blueish" tint.   As well, the 4 legs were black and their matching
pointed cone feet were gold-colored.
In the fall of 1999, we dropped the gold colored "Sim Audio" oval badge and it
was replaced with the newer square logo in black and pewter along with the name
"MOON" silk-screened onto the faceplate directly below the logo.   The standard
faceplate finish is now black with silver legs and black pointed cone feet.
As well, we offer an optional silver finish faceplate that comes with a gold colored
logo and gold pointed cone feet.
Earlier MOON components (pre Fall 1999) can have their faceplate and
name-plate upgraded to the current style.   Please visit the
Factory Upgrades section of the website for pricing details.
|
Can I purchase a remote control with more features for my i-3 or i-5
integrated amplifier than the one it originally came with ?
YES.   We offer a full-function remote called the FRM.
To keep the price of both the i-3 and i-5 as affordable as possible, we offer a
simple remote control (volume, input selection, power on/off) as standard
equipment.
|
My remote control doesn't function;   What type of warranty coverage
does Simaudio offer ?
Since remote controls generally take a great
deal of abuse (ie. falling on the floor), we can only offer a 1 year
warranty.   Please be assured that Simaudio remote controls are built
to a very high standard so as to withstand a fair amount of abuse.
|
What are the significant differences between the MOON i-3 and i-5 integrated amplifiers ?
Aside from the obvious differences in both output power rating and physical appearance, the MOON
i-5 offers more refined sonic performance while sacrificing some of the output power that the
MOON i-3 delivers.
|
Can my MOON Eclipse, P-5, W-5, Nova and/or i-5 be upgraded to a Limited Edition Series version ?
This type of upgrade is not possible for 2 simple reasons; each MOON Limited Edition model
will be produced only 250 times and it would be very cost prohibitive to perform this type
of upgrade.
|
Why doesn't the MOON Calypso DVD Transport/Player output 720p video on its DVI connector ?
There are two reasons. First, a 720p output signal contains much more data than a 480p signal,
resulting in a greater potential for signal degradation and loss. Secondly, all video monitors
using DLP, D-ILA, LCD and LCoS technology employ built-in "480p to 720p" scaler circuits. While
720p is higher resolution than 480p, the upconversion process should be done in the display
device or by a professional-grade outboard scaler rather than inside the source component.
|
Why is there no HDMI output connector on Simaudio MOON DVD players ?
Since an HDMI cable combines video and audio signals, we strongly feel that it offers a connection
of inferior quality. Furthermore, DVI to HDMI adapters are readily available.
